Esther de Waal, author, retreat-giver, and world-renowned expert on the way of St Benedict was honoured by the Lay Community of St Benedict at its annual Summer Gathering on 20th August 2022 at Worth Abbey.

She was presented with a lifetime recognition award for the inspiration she has given to generations of people of all ages and backgrounds to discover the timeless inspiration of the Rule of St Benedict.

In numerous writings, she has established an extensive oeuvre as the pioneer lay commentator and teacher on the Rule.

Over decades, Esther has given innumerable lectures and talks, and generously led retreats, workshops and pilgrimages on both sides of the Atlantic and further afield, in the process befriending many monastic communities who cherish her friendship.

Aged 91, she is unrelenting in continuing her work. She stopped over at Worth Abbey to collect her award on her way to Ireland where she was delivering a lecture.

"Esther is a friend of the LCSB having accompanied us on pilgrimages, spoken at community events, and most recently inspired our own young generation of fans of St Benedict. We recognise her contribution with gratitude," said Adam Simon, Leader of the LCSB.

On receiving the award Esther de Waal responded, "At every step of the way, Benedict has both strengthened and challenged me and he will do so until the end. And as I feel myself part of this community, this is a further strengthening. Thank you all so much for what you mean and what you're doing."

The Lay Community of St Benedict, inspired by the Gospel and the Rule of St Benedict, is an ecumenical community whose members pray together daily online, and meet physically in local and regional groups.

In 2021, the LCSB celebrated 50 years since its foundation by the Benedictine monks of Worth Abbey. We offer a warm Benedictine welcome to those wanting to integrate prayer, community and service more fully into their daily lives.
