CPW Lecture: 'Christianity and Ecological Catastrophe'
Dr Carmody Grey will deliver the Autumn lecture of Catholic People's Weeks (CPW) on the theme of 'Living in a Time of Crisis: Christianity and Ecological Catastrophe'. The online event will take place 7.30 - 9.30pm on Tuesday 25 October.
Dr Grey is Assistant Professor of Catholic Theology at Durham University, and a visiting research fellow at the Laudato Si Institute in Oxford. She has written on Biodiversity and 'On Care for our Common Home' and has a special interest in the philosophy of nature and life. She spent much of her childhood travelling to wild places around the world through her father's work as a photojournalist. These formative experiences of indigenous cultures, remote landscapes and beautiful creatures, alongside doing the rounds with her grandfather, 'the other vet' in the well-known James Herriot stories of farming life in the Yorkshire Dales, inspired her ongoing involvement in conservation expeditions and land care, as well as her teaching and research in environmental philosophy and ethics.
The UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, says the latest report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change is, "an atlas of human suffering" and "delay means death." Dr Grey is on record as lamenting the fossil fuel companies and the UK government wanting to continue with business as usual and failing to act on the climate crisis. With the next UN Conference on Climate Change taking place in Egypt next month, the lecture will explore faith engagement with care of our 'common home'.
CPW has been running holidays for Catholic people for the last 70 years. It's vision is guided by justice, peace and ecological justice. Several study events have been held on the encyclical, 'Laudato Si'.
All welcome to attend the lecture.
