The Catholic Union has written to the Prime Minister congratulating her on her election as Conservative Party Leader and appointment as Prime Minister whilst echoing Cardinal Vincent Nichols' prayerful support for her to take on the increasingly challenging responsibilities.

The letter states that the Catholic Union is ready, willing and able to work with the Prime Minister and her new team and seeks a meeting. It also serves as a reminder of the issues raised by the Catholic Union during the Conservative leadership contest.

Nigel Parker, Director the Catholic Union, says: "We have worked with Ms Truss in the past when she was in the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office to promote religious freedom and look forward to working with her as Prime Minister. There are a number of pressing issues where our expertise can assist the new administration in particular the need to ensure fairer taxes for families, protecting human life in all forms, protecting Christians from persecution, valuing Catholic and other faith schools in our education system and championing fundamental human rights".

Dear Prime Minister

Congratulations on your election as Conservative party leader and appointment as Prime Minister.

You have entered Downing Street at an important and difficult time for our country. The challenges you have faced in your first few weeks in office are greater than many other Prime Ministers in recent history. We echo Cardinal Vincent Nichols' prayerful support as you take on these responsibilities.

As you may know, the Catholic Union works with others to represent the views and interests of the 4.5 million Catholics in Britain and to advance the common good.

We were pleased to work with you in the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office to promote freedom of religion or belief, and we look forward to working with you as Prime Minister.

We wrote to you during the Conservative leadership contest to set out five areas where Catholics in this country are looking to the Government for action. I attach that letter for reference and hope we can find common ground on many of the points we raised.

We would be grateful for an early opportunity to meet some of your new team in Downing Street to see how we might be able to work together on mutual areas of interest. If this is of interest, we would be delighted to hear from your office with suitable dates for a meeting with one of your Special Advisers.

We look forward to working with you and your Ministers over the rest of this Parliament.

Yours faithfully

Nigel Parker
