Source: J&P Scotland
Justice & Peace supporters will be at the North Gate at Faslane Nuclear Base in Scotland on Saturday, 29th October, at 1pm to pray for peace and an end to nuclear weapons. Archbishop William Nolan, President of Justice & Peace Scotland and Rev Iain Greenshields The Moderator of the Church of Scotland will be present and address the Peace Witness.
The Peace Witness will last approximately 1 hour and begin with a short service led by Justice & Peace Scotland Clergy representative, Fr David Stewart SJ.
All are welcome and encouraged to attend and join in. A statement from the group says: "Nuclear threats affect and endanger everyone. Any use of nuclear weapons would have wide ranging and catastrophic impacts and could escalate into nuclear war that would impact the entire planet. A nuclear threat against one country is a threat against all countries. Like climate change and the pandemic, the terrible risks posed by nuclear weapons are a global problem that require a global response. This is why our voice is so important.
"We hope you will join us at Faslane, the home of UK nuclear weapons, to add your voice to ours in calling for the abolition of nuclear weapons and a safer world for everyone on Saturday 29th October."
Fr David Stewart said: "Weapons of mass destruction, have no place here or anywhere in our Common Home. We feel sure that the doctrine of deterrence, of terror, of mutually-assured destruction, cannot ever be compatible with the dream of God the Creator for this world and all the people in it."
Rt Rev Dr Iain Greenshields, said: "From a Christian perspective, as followers of Jesus Christ, he instructed us to be peacemakers and not bomb makers. Do we really want to boast of or maintain such weaponry? How in God's name can we hold such a position? Indeed, will God not one day judge us for condoning even the existence of such weapons of mass destruction and terror."
