World Cup Prayer
Source: Bread4Today
As stadium lights turn on across sand swept Qatar, more than half the world will turn their attention to the beautiful game.
The sun will no doubt shine on all who chose to encounter other cultures in our human family with fraternal hearts and open minds.
In this spirit of solidarity, we must also acknowledge the darkness that looms over this tournament.
The darkness found in the cheap, disposable immigrant workforce that laboured to build these modern day pyramids.
We pray with Pope Francis for an economy whose activity is in service of the human being, not only the few, but all, especially the poor.
We pray for all of those who live in Qatar, and around the world who are not free to love who they love for fear of arrest or violent attacks.
We pray for our common home, may we protect creation in the face of gratuitous infrastructure projects.
Lord of all nations, as so many chose to gather & celebrate our shared humanity in sport, let us hold up those who have suffered to bring us this year's FIFA World Cup.
