"I hope in God it will be seen that women in time to come will do much." - Mary Ward, 1617
Mary Ward (23 Jan 1585 - 30 Jan 1645) was the foundress of the religious order that resides at the Bar Convent in York, now known as the Congregation of Jesus. It was her mission to educate girls, and it is thanks to her that her followers established the first school for girls in England in 1669 and the second in 1686.
The Bar Convent is still home to the Congregation of Jesus. The Grade I listed buildings are open to the public, welcoming those of all faiths and none.
