Manchester: Inspired sport and medical scientists at Saint Paul's!
Sport and Medical Science was the subject explored by students from Saint Paul's Catholic High School in Wythenshawe, Greater Manchester who recently took part in a Medical Science Week, a celebration of the links between science and medicine.
The objective of the Year 9 Sport and Medical Science Week was to explore some of the upcoming GCSE content allowing pupils to see the links between Science and advances in the field of medicine.
The projects aimed to link some of the practical skills which the pupils have learned in their Science studies to the 'real world' and potential medical related careers they could pursue.
Pupils used their investigative skills to evaluate substances used to control microbes as well as learning about anti-doping in sports. They were also given information relating to careers in scientific research and healthcare.
Miss Charlotte Dewhurst, Lead Practitioner of Science, said: "The week's programme aimed to inspire the next generation of medical scientists with fun and participative activities. The activities highlighted how science relates to our everyday lives. In addition to exploring future medical related careers, a health science project such as this can be a great way to engage students in learning about how the human body works, and how the students can maintain good health. This can be an important investment for the remainder of their lives."
Miss Dewhurst added: "There were lots of exciting activities happening throughout our school. We are very keen to inspire and engage the students in the wonder and excitement of Science and Medicine."
Mr Stephen McMahon, Head of Science, added: "It's not only doctors who need to know about health science. The more we learn, the more we are able to make better decisions in our lives to maintain good health. The activities during the week were great fun and very popular with the students. The sessions helped the students see how Science can be applied in real life."
"Science and Medicine are vital to the future of our country and involvement in projects such as this are a great way for us to encourage our students to enjoy the subjects and see them as both interesting and accessible," commented Mr Mike Whiteside, Deputy Headteacher at Saint Paul's. "We need to do everything we can to inspire the next generation of Medics."
