The Missionary Rosary

  • Anita Boniface

The Month of Mary is well and truly upon us, and for anyone looking to renew their commitment to the Rosary the Comboni Missionaries have published a beautiful vibrant Rosary booklet to guide readers through each decade. Each of the 32 pages bursts into life with a series of colourful illustrations for each Mystery, with the invitation to pray for the good of the world.

The First Joyful Mystery - The Annunciation - features an illustration from Nigerian artist Paul Woelfel. In a unique and original way the beautiful watercolour painting shows an African Angel Gabriel delivering the message of the Annunciation to an African Mary in the form of a letter hidden in a simple envelope.

The lovely prayer to accompany the Scripture from Luke 1:26-38 is "Help us to say our 'YES' every day. Help those who are called to be missionary Priests, Brothers, Sisters or Lay Missionaries to answer His call."

Prayers reflect the content of Scripture, thoughtfully journeying through petitioning and thanksgiving.

The Third joyful Mystery, the Birth of Our Lord relates: "Mary, you are the Mother of Jesus and the Mother of God. Your Son chose to be born poor that we might learn to set our hearts on His Kingdom, and not on position, prestige, or possessions. As we share with the poor the treasure of the faith, hep us to build a world of justice, love and peace."

The Fourth Luminous Mystery savours the transformative power of grace and asks Mary to "teach us how to contemplate the face of your Son and to discover in him the way to the Father.

"… We pray for all those who live in doubt that they may see Jesus through the eyes of faith an believe in Him. We pray for all missionaries that they may bring to the world the joy of knowing their heavenly Father who cares for him and his children."

This booklet is a message of hope, peace and unity for the world. Each mystery brings the light of the Gospel to bear on world issues of justice, peace, human and religious rights, and the needs, values and cultures of the developing nations.

Praying each decade and meditating on the mysteries will enable the reader to see Christ in their neighbour and feel part of the global family of Christ.
