US climate envoy John Kerry, told a House of representatives hearing on Thursday that America will not be paying into the Loss and Damage Fund agreed at COP27 last year, to compensate poorer countries bearing the brunt of the climate crisis.
Illari Noriega, Christian Aid's Climate Policy Lead, commented: "It's simply outrageous that both the world's biggest historical polluter and the world's biggest economy is refusing to contribute to the Loss and Damage Fund that they signed up to only months ago.
"Rich countries like the US have already undermined trust in the international climate negotiations by failing to deliver the long promised $100 billion in climate finance which was due in 2020. They are failing the poorest people in the world in need of help after their homes and livelihoods have been destroyed by floods, droughts and storms.
"The US is becoming a rogue nation on climate change. Contributing to the Loss and Damage Fund is the least the US can do to rebalance the climate injustice they are responsible for."
