Scotland: Memorial to victims of UK nuclear testing in Australia
Faslane Peace Camp, close to HM Naval Base Clyde, has remembered the victims of the UK's nuclear testing in Australia and its Territories, with the addition of a memorial plaque to its Peace Garden.
In time for the 71st anniversary of the first test on 3rd October 1952, the plaque joins the Peace Pole: the Japanese Cherry Tree planted in 1985 by survivors of the first ever nuclear attack on Hiroshima on 6th August 1945 - and the Rowan tree and plaque for the survivors of the US nuclear testing in the Marshall Islands, put in place on 1st March, 2021; and artwork by former Peace Campers.
The new plaque shows the Aboriginal lands which were selected for the testing, and some of the devastating effects caused by the radioactive contamination and destruction. The colours and pattern reflect Aboriginal art and their Rite of Passage tradition of Walkabout. Close by, a small coniferous tree has been planted. This tree was brought from the roundabout on the Military Road nearby - which the Nuclear Convoys from AWE Burghfield in Berkshire travel past to reach RNAD Coulport.
