Glasgow: St Mungo's Festival 2024
Named after St Mungo, Glasgow's Patron Saint, the Festival celebrates the city's history and people through events and talks up to the date of his feast day on 13 January. The 2024 Festival is in its 15th year and runs from today to 14 January. The Festival is organised by The Mediaeval Glasgow Trust, Glasgow Churches Together and Glasgow Life.
The 2024 Festival opened with a talk by Dr Gordon Wyllie's at Glasgow's St Mungo Museum of Religious Life & Art. He delved into how communities, Glasgow's among them, organised themselves in the Mediaeval period and how the structures they built persist into the present day. Wednesday will see Alan Tavener and the Strathclyde University Chamber choir in a performance of music in honour of St Mungo at St Columbkille's in Rutherglen.
Unfortunately this year's Molendinar Lecture has had to be postponed but there will be a second talk at the St Mungo Museum on Thursday 11th with Professor Elaine Moohan discussing the music sung at Glasgow Cathedral from its foundation up until the 17th century. There will be an opportunity for you to sing!
On Friday 12th there will be a liturgical Vespers of St Mungo in St Andrew's Cathedral led by the St Mungo Singers at 7pm.
On the Feast day itself there are four events: The annual walk from Provanmill to the Cathedral in the morning, followed by the 'Opening of the Vita Kentigerni' at the Mitchell Library in the afternoon where you can listen to readings from St Mungo's Life. We also have our regular discussion between Dr Gordon Wyllie and the Revd Mark Johnston on the Signs and Symbols to be seen in Glasgow Cathedral which you can watch on our YouTube channel.
The Festival concludes on Sunday 14th with the Festival Ecumenical Service held at Glasgow Cathedral. Join the Lord Provost and Civic representatives in honouring Glasgow's patron Mungo and in celebration of his city.
