Discovering Stevie Smith at St Augustine's Abbey, Chilworth
Discovering Stevie Smith - An evening of poetry and music in aid of Chilworth's Benedictine monkswill take place in the Assisi Room of St Augustine's Abbey, this coming Friday, 26 January. Donations welcome.
Stevie Smith, born in 1902, was an English poet known for her poignant and darkly humorous verses. Despite her nursery rhyme-like style, her works delved into themes of suffering, mortality, and the sinister realities behind innocence. Her most famous piece, "Not Waving But Drowning," reflects this depth. Critically acclaimed for her originality, she defied categorisation and wrote with a blend of wit and seriousness that both puzzled and fascinated readers. Smith's distinct language added layers to her poems, evoking refined, ironic unhappiness.
The event is on Friday, 26 January 7.30pm at St Augustine's Abbey in Sample Oak Lane, Chilworth, GU4 8QR.
