York: Disguised to Survive exhibition at Bar Convent
You may have heard of Bonfire Night and York's links to the Gunpowder Plot, but how much do you know about the lives of ordinary Catholics during this time? A new display and exhibition opening at the Bar Convent in York on Saturday, 5 October, looks at people linked to the Plot, how it impacted those who weren't involved, and reveals the extraordinary lengths Catholics went to in order to conceal their religion from the authorities.
From hiding holes and disguises to invisible ink, secret codes; find the clues and explore the fascinating collections to uncover the ingenious ways that Catholics continued to practise their religion and how this convent remained a secret for 300 years without ever being discovered!
Plus: See the only known object to have survived all the raids on Catholic houses following the discovery of the Plot; Father Edward Olcorne's Crucifix.
Complete the trail to be in with a chance to win a £30 voucher to use in the café.
The exhibition runs from Saturday 5 October to Wednesday 20 November 2024.
