CAFOD: Let's ask Ed Miliband to make sure polluters at the price!

Source: CAFOD

Year after year, fossil fuel companies have been profiting from polluting the world and driving the climate crisis. At the same time, countries that have contributed least to the crisis are left without the money to cope with its consequences.

But this year we have a chance to change that. Starting today, world leaders are gathering for the COP29 climate talks. They'll be negotiating a new agreement on the 'climate finance' that countries on the frontline of the climate emergency will receive.

Let's call on the UK's Climate Secretary, Ed Miliband, to ensure the communities hardest hit by the climate crisis have the money they need to tackle it - and that the biggest polluters pick up the bill.

Climate finance is vital money that developing countries need to prepare for emergencies, rebuild from disasters and access renewable energy. But the cash provided so far to pay for these measures has been a drop in the ocean compared to what's needed.

That's why we must act now to ensure the government plays its part at COP29 to reach a new and ambitious climate finance agreement.

The good news is that money for climate finance can be raised without it costing ordinary taxpayers a penny. By taxing fossil fuel companies and buyers of private jets, we could raise huge sums for climate finance. And by cancelling the unjust debts of countries that are facing the worst impacts of the climate and debt crises, we could free up yet more cash for communities to protect themselves against disasters.

Let's call on the Climate Secretary to play his part and push for an ambitious and fair climate finance agreement at COP29. Write to him here: https://action.cafod.org.uk/page/155367/action/1?
