Southampton: New Stella Maris centre blessed by Bishop Egan

Bishop Philip Egan of Portsmouth Diocese has blessed the new Southampton Seafarers' Club to officially mark its opening at a ceremony held last Tuesday.

The Seafarers' Club has been set up by Stella Maris (formerly known as Apostleship of the Sea). It will offer crew from ships visiting the port of Southampton a safe haven, respite from their busy routines and a chance to connect with Stella Maris' chaplains and volunteers at the Club.

The Club offers free hot beverages, television, games and access to free Wi-Fi. The Club is also within a few minutes' walk of shops, food outlets, supermarkets and bureaux de change.

Speaking at the Blessing ceremony, Bishop Philip thanked Stella Maris for its work caring for seafarers and for its vision in creating this Club with facilities, a place of peace, support and spiritual refuge.

"The work of Stella Maris is not just philanthropy. It is a spiritual work motivated by our Christian faith and values, which makes us want to meet Jesus in the other, especially in the poor and needy, the lonely, those far away from home and family, those working, often in harsh conditions, long hours, days, weeks and months away from their own land for our benefit," said Bishop Philip.

He added that Stella Maris' chaplaincy and ministry is symbolised by the blessing of the new Club, which is joined to the church of St Joseph's.

"It's here that those who wish can access spiritual guidance, comfort and the Church's sacraments. It's this spiritual mission which is the source and summit of the work of Stella Maris. It's this that drives its volunteers and activity. It's this that we long to share with everyone using this Club," he said.

Later in the day, a ribbon cutting ceremony was held with representatives from the various funders of the project: the Seamen's Friendly Society of St Paul, the Merchant Navy Welfare Board, The Seafarers' Charity, and Mission to Seafarers (as well as Stella Maris itself).

Tim Hill, Stella Maris CEO and National Director said: "The opening of this Seafarers' Club is an extension of our mission to provide care, community, and comfort to those at sea."

"We thank all those who have made the new Seafarers' Club possible, including funders, parishes, volunteers, other charities, and the broader community, for their generosity and commitment to serving seafarers. It's a collaborative venture with other charities and we're strengthened by their co-operation in making the Club a success.

"It's our aspiration that the Seafarers' Club will become a beacon of hope and a source of strength for seafarers," he added.
