London: Catholic History Walks

St Thomas More's mulberry tree

St Thomas More's mulberry tree

Would you like to walk in the steps of St Thomas More, St John Henry Newman, St Dunstan or St Ethelburga? The current series of Catholic History Walks, led by the author, broadcaster and historian, Joanna Bogle, cover Chelsea, City/Monument, Richmond, Islington and Westminster. They delve into many historical events, famous people, heroes and heroines, Kings and Queens, saints and sinners.

A Walk takes between one and one-and-a-half hours and you can of course leave at any time.

On Sunday 9 February a walk in the footsteps of St Thomas More begins at 3pm at the Church of our Most Holy Redeemer and St Thomas More, Cheyne Row, London SW3 5QZ (nearest tube: Sloane Square). The group will walk to the site of St Thomas More's home, and finish with Vespers and Benediction at Allen Hall, where men are training for the priesthood. You can also visit the mulberry tree planted by St Thomas in the garden.

On Friday 28 February at 2.30pm, a walk begins at St Mary Moorfields, Eldon Street, London EC2M 7LS. Nearest tube: Moorgate. There is a Mass at 1pm - if you wish to attend that, there is time for a quick sandwich before joining the Walk. St Mary's is part of the pilgrim Westminster Way. In this Jubilee Year - they will be walking to the London Charterhouse, home of the Carthusian Saints John Houghton, Robert Lawrence and Augustine Webster - the first to be martyred under Henry VIII - and then on to St Etheldreda's, Ely Place.
