Fr Willem Klaver MHM is a Mill Hill Missionary ministering in the Archdiocese of New York. He sent this heartfelt message:

What is happening here in the United States is unprecedented. The past two weeks have been disastrous for America and the rest of the world. It feels like a slow coup is underway under Trump at the expense of the rule of law and the entire system of government is being undermined at the expense of the public interest and in favour of an extreme right-wing ideology.

There are purges everywhere with evil intentions so that no one in power is accountable anymore. It is extremely worrying. Even church buildings are free for government agencies to raid and arrest people. The abolition of policies to promote diversity among staff is 'to make America white again'. Musk & Co are being given an extraordinary amount of power without having to answer to anyone but Trump.

Almost all foreign aid has been stopped at the expense of people who desperately need it. The first signs of an authoritarian regime or dictatorship are clearly visible. The first trade wars with neighbouring countries have started. I doubt that NATO as we know the alliance will survive under Trump.

There is a lot at stake, especially the security of Europe. I fear that ultimately the free press will be attacked. I sincerely hope that democracy and the constitution in America will survive this. I am not sure. It feels like a train going downhill that cannot be stopped.

And then two major plane crashes in two days with many victims. What a loss and great sadness for the relatives. May they Rest in Eternal Peace!
