Relating Catholic Social Teaching to Prison Chaplaincy

Source: Margaret Beaufort Institute

Chaplains, ministers, and pastoral care workers are invited to this reflective and academic online session (Tuesday, 25 March 4-6pm) led by Dr Gemma Simmonds, who has dedicated over 25 years to prison chaplaincy in Brazil.

This session will explore the integration of Catholic Social Teaching with prison chaplaincy practices, focusing particularly on the principles of restorative justice and reconciliation. Central to the discussion will be the Sycamore Tree course within the prison system, which offers a transformative approach to justice and healing.

Participants will be encouraged to engage with the 12 Habits of Reconciliation as outlined by the Rose Castle Foundation and reflect on how these principles can be applied to offenders' lives. The session will also delve into the Ignatian Examen as a vital tool for self-reflection, promoting personal dignity and a sense of worth.

This course offers a unique opportunity for professional and personal growth, fostering meaningful conversations on the intersection of faith, justice, and healing within the prison system.

Join us for this important event - together, let's reflect on how Catholic Social Teaching can inform restorative practices and chaplaincy work.
