Nigeria: Anglican cathedral burned down

St Peter's Anglican Cathedral in Dutse, Nigeria, was burned to the ground on Tuesday after an between Muslims and Christians escalated into a full blown riot, the Anglican Communion News (ACN) reports. The Rt Revd Yesufu Lumu, Bishop of Dutse said it was calm the night after, but he was very concerned that the police had not responded to appeals for protection from the Christians." According to one report, the riot was sparked off by an alleged blasphemous comment by a Christian woman, who reportedly spoke in reaction to a similarly irreverent statement by a male Muslim." The Provincial Communications Officer, the Revd Canon AkinTunde Popoola, told ACNS, "All vehicles belonging to the Diocese were burnt as well as business premises of some church members" during the rioting on 19th September. The bishop said: "No one was hurt. We are simply praying that the conflict does not spread." Source ACN
